Remembering That Tragedy That Took Some of Reba McEntires Closest Friends

This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the tragic plane crash that forever altered the lives of Reba McEntire and her musical family.
The incident, which occurred on March 16, 1991, claimed the lives of eight of McEntire’s bandmates and crew members.
Each of whom was not only a skilled musician but also a dear friend.

The Fateful Flight for Reba McEntire’s Crew
On that fateful night, the ill-fated plane was en route from San Diego to Indiana when disaster struck.

One of its wings collided with a boulder atop Otay Mountain, leading to a catastrophic crash.
This tragic accident robbed the world of incredible talent, leaving an indelible mark on the country music industry.

Reba’s Tribute to Her Lost Friends
In the wake of the anniversary, McEntire took to to express her enduring gratitude to the people who had such a profound influence on her life and the music business. “Their passion for music and their incredible stage presence continue to inspire us all,” McEntire shared in a tribute video posted to Instagram. The video featured a recording of the ensemble performing, serving as a poignant tribute to their talent and unity.

The Day That Changed Everything
While the rest of the crew embarked on the journey, Reba stayed behind at the hotel with her husband, Narvel Blackstock, and her stylist, as she was feeling unwell. This decision, though seemingly minor at the time, ended up saving her life.
Among those who perished were Paula Kaye Evans, Terry Jackson, Chris Austin, Joey Cigainero, Jim Hammon, and the tour manager. Each individual was an integral part of McEntire’s tour, and their loss was deeply felt by all who knew them.

The tragedy not only affected McEntire and her immediate circle but also resonated throughout the music community. Fans and fellow musicians alike shared their condolences and memories of the lost band members, underscoring the widespread impact these individuals had.Reba recounted the devastating moment she learned of the crash in a 2012 interview with Oprah Winfrey. “When we received the notification, Narvel went to meet our pilot, who revealed the devastating news,” she recalled. “Narvel came back to our hotel room in the wee hours of the morning with the tragic news that one of the planes had crashed. ‘Are they all right?’ I inquired. ‘I don’t think so,’ he retorted. Then I persisted, ‘But you’re not sure?’ He said gently, ‘I don’t think so.’”
