Eleven Minutes Was All It Took

My attorney’s voice turned sharp. “Tom, that deed isn’t the only forged document. Someone filed paperwork two weeks ago attempting to change the trustee records for the Hale Family Trust.” I looked at Derek’s parents, then at the fake signature of my dead wife. Ron suddenly understood that his little retirement plan had become something much bigger. Deputy Mills calmly asked for the document, and when Ron hesitated, the deputy repeated himself. This time, Ron handed it over.

The sheriff’s office contacted the county recorder while my attorney sent over the original trust documents and signature records. Within an hour, the truth became painfully clear: Derek had used Claire’s access to old family files, copied Margaret’s signature from a previous document, and created a chain of forged paperwork to make the cabin appear transferable. But the biggest shock came when Claire called me in tears. She had never agreed to sign anything over. Derek had been planning to take the cabin without her knowledge—or mine.

Ron and Linda had to reload every box into the U-Haul while Deputy Mills stood nearby. Derek arrived twenty minutes later, furious and demanding to know who had “turned this into a police matter.” Then he saw the sheriff, the forged deed, and his parents loading their belongings back into the truck. His face went completely white.

Claire filed for divorce before the investigation was finished. Derek lost far more than his marriage when the forged documents were traced back to him, and Ron never looked at me the same way again. A few months later, I returned to the cabin, repaired the leaking roof, and put Margaret’s coffee mug back exactly where it belonged. Standing on the porch, I realized something simple: Derek thought that because my wife was gone, nobody would protect what she left behind. He forgot that I was still here—and I had eleven minutes to remind him.
