The Birthday Surprise I Was Never Supposed to Bring

Captain Reyes took a slow breath before answering. “Amanda… Tyler isn’t on duty today.” My fingers tightened around the cake box. “What do you mean? He left this morning for his shift.” The captain looked toward the other firefighters, then back at me. “Tyler hasn’t been assigned to this station for almost three months.” My stomach dropped. Before I could process those words, he quietly explained that Tyler had transferred to another department after requesting a schedule change. The next morning, Tyler and I drove together to see Noah. I brought the cake, which had survived the night in our refrigerator, and we lit the candles together in his quiet kitchen. Tyler looked embarrassed as I handed him a balloon that had slowly begun to deflate. “Best birthday ever?” I asked. He laughed for the first time in days. “Not because of the surprise,” he said, taking my hand. “Because I finally stopped hiding from the person I should have trusted most.”… READ MORE BELOW
