A Grandfather’s Wisdom

Last weekend, I took my 92-year-old dad to the mall to buy him a new pair of shoes. Afterward, we stopped by the food court for a meal and sat next to a teenager with brightly colored spiked hair—green, red, orange, and blue, all mixed together in a bold display. My dad, who never judged people based on appearances, watched him with curiosity, not in judgment but with quiet interest. I noticed the teen glancing back, clearly wondering why my dad was so intent on observing him.

Finally, the teenager, growing a little impatient, turned to my dad and asked with a playful, sarcastic edge, “What’s the matter, sir? Never done anything fun in your life?” I braced myself, knowing my dad still had a sharp wit despite his age. I almost choked on my meal as I waited for his response. But my dad calmly set his fork down, smiled gently, and said something so unexpected that even the boy leaned in to listen.

“When I was young,” Dad began, “I didn’t have colorful hair, but I tried to make the world around me brighter through kindness, respect, and joy.” The table fell silent for a moment as those simple words sank in. He paused before adding, “It’s wonderful that you express yourself through color. Just remember, the brightest thing you can share is your character.” The teen blinked, his tough exterior softening as he reflected on what my dad said.

A small smile appeared on the boy’s face as he nodded and whispered a soft “thank you.” Dad went back to his meal as though nothing extraordinary had just happened, but I sat there in awe. It was a moment where wisdom was shared so quietly yet had such a deep, lasting impact. That afternoon reminded me that while appearances may grab attention, it’s the heart that truly leaves a lasting impression.
