I went to our country house secretly from my husband to find out what he was doing there: When I opened the door, I was overcome with real horror.

My husband Mark and I own a small country house where we used to spend nearly every weekend. We planted flowers, worked in the garden, grilled outside, and enjoyed escaping the noise of the city. Then, gradually, Mark stopped wanting to go. There was always an excuse—work, exhaustion, a headache. I didn’t question it at first, until a neighbor from the village called and casually mentioned she had seen him at the house the day before. I insisted she must be mistaken, but she was certain. After I hung up, a heavy feeling settled in my chest. If he had gone there, why hadn’t he told me?

The following weekend, when I suggested going alone to get some fresh air, Mark reacted sharply and told me not to. His sudden tension made my suspicions grow. After he left the house later that day, I decided to follow him. I kept my distance as he drove toward the village. By the time I reached the country house, my heart was pounding and my hands were trembling. I feared I might discover an affair—but what I found inside was far worse.

The house was packed with electronics: brand-new televisions, laptops, tablets, cameras, and boxed tools. In bags and drawers, I saw jewelry—watches, chains, earrings—and stacks of cash spread across the table. It didn’t look like a hobby or storage. It looked like a warehouse. When Mark returned, I didn’t scream. I simply asked him to explain. He tried to brush it off at first, claiming they were temporary items. But when I told him I had seen everything, he went silent.

Eventually, he confessed. He had been fired two years earlier and never told me. After failing to find stable work and drowning in loans, he began burglarizing empty homes. He watched properties, broke in at night, sold some items quickly, and stored the rest in our country house to avoid suspicion. As he spoke, I felt like I was looking at a stranger. The man I trusted had been living a double life, risking prison every day. In that moment, I realized I would rather have discovered an affair—because the truth I uncovered was far more frightening.
