I drove for hours, following that fragment to a dilapidated house on the edge of town. My heart pounded as I approached, every instinct screaming both to run and to break down the door. A curtain shifted. Then I heard it—my name, whispered in the smallest, hoarsest voice. Amber. She was thinner, terrified, but alive. She ran into my arms, sobbing apologies I didn’t need. All that mattered was the weight of her in my embrace, proof that love, obsession, and refusal to surrender had dragged her back from the dark.
