In news that has filled the entire region with sadness, a tragic accident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, July 5, on the highway to Magdalena Peñasco, located in the beautiful Mixteca region of Oaxaca. A bus carrying several passengers overturned, leaving a preliminary death toll of 27 people and another 17 injured, according to statements by the Secretary of Government of Oaxaca, Jesús Romero López.

According to initial reports, the vehicle involved was a 2002 Jaguar bus, which departed from Santiago Yosondúa bound for Mexico City. Unfortunately, on the way to Magdalena Peñasco, the driver lost control of the bus, causing it to fall down a ravine and onto the riverbank, just behind the community church.

The consequences of this tragic incident were devastating. The passengers were trapped underneath the bus, which caused their instant deaths, according to state authorities and the Civil Protection teams that were quickly dispatched to the scene.

Both the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office and paramedics from various agencies immediately responded to the accident scene to provide assistance to the injured. The injured were taken to the IMSS Bienestar Rural Hospital in Tlaxiaco, located near the scene.

Authorities from the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office have already begun the initial investigations to determine the causes of this terrible accident. Many of the passengers who lost their lives in the tragic event remain to be identified.

The local community, in collaboration with authorities, is carrying out arduous work to recover the bodies. Heavy machinery has even been used to lift the wreckage of the destroyed bus. The accident occurred shortly after six o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, July 5, a tragedy that has plunged the entire Mixteca region of Oaxaca into dismay.

At times like this, it’s important to emphasize the importance of taking precautions on the roads and promoting responsible driving to prevent tragedies of this magnitude. Our thoughts and condolences are with the families of the victims in this time of grief and loss. Below, we list some essential precautions we should keep in mind when traveling on the roads:

Respect speed limits: Adjusting your speed to the type of road, weather conditions, and traffic is essential. Exceeding the speed limits significantly increases the risk of accidents and reduces reaction time to unexpected events.

Maintain a safe distance: It’s recommended to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you to allow sufficient braking and maneuvering space. This gives you more time to react to any eventuality.

Always wear your seat belt: It is essential that all vehicle occupants wear their seat belts at all times. This safety device reduces the risk of serious injury in the event of a collision or sudden braking.

Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs: Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is extremely dangerous and is prohibited by law. These substances impair attention, reflexes, and decision-making, significantly increasing the risk of accidents.

Obey traffic signs: Road signs provide vital information about road conditions and traffic rules. It is essential to respect and obey all signs, including traffic lights, stop signs, yield signs, and speed limits.

Maintaining your vehicle in good condition: Performing regular vehicle maintenance is crucial to ensure its proper functioning. Checking the brakes, tires, lights, and other important components will help prevent mechanical failures while on the road.

Avoid distractions while driving: Using a cell phone, eating, applying makeup, or doing other activities that distract you from driving can be fatal. It’s essential to stay focused on the road and avoid distractions that compromise safety.

Overtaking safely: If you need to overtake another vehicle, it’s important to do so safely, respecting traffic laws and ensuring you have enough space to complete the maneuver.

Caution in adverse conditions: In adverse weather conditions such as rain, fog, or mist, it is necessary to reduce speed, turn on your lights, and increase your following distance. These conditions reduce visibility and tire grip, so you should drive with extra caution.

Get adequate rest: Fatigue behind the wheel can be as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol. It’s important to get enough rest before embarking on a long trip and take regular breaks to rest and recharge.
