Joe Biden’s ‘Inappropriate’ Behavior at Pope Francis’ Funeral Causes a Stir — Video

At Pope Francis’s funeral on April 26, 2025, the presence of major political figures drew widespread attention — but so did their behavior.

Former President Joe Biden, who attended the service alongside his wife, Jill Biden, stirred controversy after being spotted taking selfies with other officials upon his arrival at St. Peter’s Square. Although no longer the sitting president, Biden and his wife were seated toward the back of the dignitaries’ section, in accordance with protocol. Nevertheless, some viewers were taken aback by what they considered inappropriate behavior at such a solemn event.

Comments criticizing Biden flooded social media. One user called it “extremely inappropriate” to snap selfies at a funeral, while others labeled it “disrespectful” and “messed up.” Photos of Biden posing with officials, including Ugandan Member of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, spread rapidly online.

Tayebwa, who also posted a tribute to Pope Francis, shared a selfie he had taken with Biden, describing the occasion as a moment of profound personal significance. The backlash highlighted the sensitivity surrounding the farewell to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 due to a stroke. His death marked the end of a remarkable papacy defined by humility, progressive stances, and a lifelong devotion to helping the marginalized. Following his passing, Biden expressed his grief publicly, calling Pope Francis “one of the most consequential leaders of our time” and reflecting on how honored he was to have met him.

I STOPPED TO HELP AN OLD MAN INTO A RESTAURANT—AND HE CHANGED THE WAY I SEE MY OWN DAD It was supposed to be a quick pizza run. I’d just finished a brutal shift at the shop, my hands were still covered in grease, and all I wanted was a large pepperoni and my couch. But right as I pulled into the lot, I saw this older guy standing at the edge of the sidewalk. He had one of those metal canes, the kind that clinks with every step, and he was trying to make it up the curb outside Salerno’s. People were walking by, rushing in or out with their takeout bags, barely glancing at him. I don’t know what made me stop—maybe guilt, maybe instinct—but I rolled down my window and asked, “You need a hand?” He looked over, kinda surprised, and nodded. Didn’t say much, just smiled. So I parked, jogged over, and held out my arm. He gripped it with more strength than I expected. We moved real slow, and I noticed his shoes were the kind my dad used to wear—big, clunky orthopedic ones with Velcro straps. I suddenly had this weird flash of Dad standing in our kitchen, trying to open a jar, getting frustrated, and pretending he wasn’t. I got the old man inside, and the hostess greeted him like she knew him. She said, “Hey, Mr. Benning, usual table?” He chuckled and said, “Not alone today.” Then he looked at me and said, “You hungry, son?” I didn’t know what to say. I hadn’t planned to stay, but the way he said it—it felt like maybe this wasn’t just about the pizza. (read the continuation in the first cᴑmment)
