She singled out Musk, referring to him as “President Musk,” and claimed his influence on Republican lawmakers was the key reason for their rejection of the original bipartisan proposal.
We had a deal,” she exclaimed passionately. “A deal that Republicans and Democrats worked on together for over a year and a half. But then, ‘President Musk’ stepped in. He told them, ‘Don’t do it, shut the government down,’ and they listened. They were scared!”
DeLauro’s frustration was palpable as she lambasted Musk, highlighting his immense wealth and government contracts. She questioned his understanding of the real-world consequences of a government shutdown, particularly for federal employees and contractors who rely on timely paychecks.
“What does he know about what happens when the government shuts down?” she continued, her voice rising with indignation. “Are his employees furloughed? Is he furloughed? Of course not! But hardworking Americans, the people who keep this country running, they’re the ones who suffer.”
Her anger wasn’t just directed at Musk but also at her Republican colleagues. She criticized their apparent allegiance to the billionaire, accusing them of prioritizing his interests over the needs of everyday Americans. “At the behest of the world’s richest man, who no one voted for, Congress has been thrown into chaos. Who’s really in charge here?”
DeLauro also took aim at the revised spending bill, accusing it of being hastily assembled and lacking the bipartisan input that had defined the earlier proposal. She highlighted specific concerns, including provisions that she claimed would benefit pharmaceutical companies, weaken protections for American workers, and cater to ultra-wealthy individuals like Musk.
“This bill strips away key measures to rein in Big Pharma, betrays our efforts to reinvest in American businesses, and fuels foreign adversaries like the Chinese Communist Party,” she asserted. “And all of this, just to cut taxes for billionaires while raising deficits on the backs of the American people.”
Calling for a return to unity, DeLauro implored Congress to revisit the original bipartisan deal. She warned against allowing what she called an “illegitimate oligarchy” to dictate the nation’s legislative agenda.
“We cannot let unelected oligarchs usurp the authority of Congress or the will of the American people. We must reject this reckless, last-minute proposal and restore integrity to our legislative process.”
Her impassioned plea concluded with a call for accountability and a rejection of outside influences that she believes undermine the legislative process.
