My daughter, Emma, has always been the rainbow child, wearing the brightest colors and drawing unicorns and butterflies.<\/p>\n

But recently, there has been a change in her behavior. She\u2019s been withdrawn, hasn\u2019t been eating properly, and always wants to sit outside.<\/p>\n

At first, I didn\u2019t think much about it because Emma constantly goes through phases. But then, her teacher, Mrs Silverton, called me in for a parent-teacher meeting.<\/p>\n

She was just in kindergarten, but the school prided itself on checking in with parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to alarm you, Jennifer, but there\u2019s something concerning going on with Emma.\u201d<\/p>\n

She pulled out a yellow file and showed me a series of drawings by Emma \u2014 all dark and shadowy, menacing even.<\/p>\n

I drove home from the school in silence. I knew that something was different with Emma, but I didn\u2019t think it was that bad.<\/p>\n

Later, while I made noodles for our dinner, I decided to talk to Emma about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cSweetheart,\u201d I said. \u201cI went in to see Mrs Silverton today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReally? Why?\u201d she asked curiously.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe spoke about the new drawings you\u2019ve been doing and how different they are from the usual ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked at her bowl of noodles, twirling her fork through it \u2014 her response was silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmma, darling, you can tell Momma anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
