Reign Murphy was going about her day when she decided to go shopping at Target. While shopping, a red, green, and white sweater caught her attention. She picked the sweater up and was shocked by the \u201cinsensitive\u201d words emblazoned across the front of the sweater.<\/p>\n

Reign, who was suffering from the real OCD at the time, was deeply offended by the phrase that she snapped a photo and shamed the US retailer for making fun of people with the psychological disorder.<\/p>\n
She later shared a Tweet alongside the photo that went viral immediately receiving over a thousand retweets. The tweet read \u201cI\u2019d really appreciate it if you didn\u2019t sell my mental illness as a fashion statement.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nAlthough the phrase on the merchandise has been used by many product designers \u2014 to describe those who love everything Christmas, and perhaps go overboard, the play on obsessive-compulsive disorder had some internet users enraged while others thought the message was neither offensive nor hurtful despite dealing with the disorder themselves.<\/p>\n
Social media users with similar sentiments blasted the large US retail store for what they say was \u201cpicking fun at mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nBut other internet users who claimed to have had OCD felt the rage against the store was unnecessary and defended the sale of the controversial sweatshirt.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs someone with OCD, Target\u2019s OCD sweater doesn\u2019t offend me the least bit,\u201d a user posted.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs someone who has OCD, I don\u2019t see any reason to be angry about Target\u2019s \u2018offensive\u2019 sweater \u2013 it\u2019s perfectly even!\u201d another user posted.<\/p>\n
Jessica Carlson, Target\u2019s spokesperson, eventually responded to the backlash and apologized to those offended by the merchandise but insisted they had no plans to remove it from its shelves.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe currently do not have plans to remove this sweater,\u201d Carlson said<\/p>\n
As per the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, approximately 2.5 million or 1.2% of the U.S. population suffer from OCD.<\/p>\n
In 2015, Target was under controversy after another woman claimed some of their women\u2019s T-shirts with the word \u201cTrophy\u201d on the front were insulting.
