He introduced many species to the wide public and always spoke of the natural world with much affection. What\u2019s more, he passed on that love to his children who followed into their dad\u2019s footsteps and are keeping his legacy alive.<\/p>\n<p>Steve lost his life in 2006 during filming at the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. He was pierced through the chest by a stingray.\u201cHe was having trouble breathing. Even if we\u2019d been able to get him into an emergency ward at that moment we probably wouldn\u2019t have been able to save him, because the damage to his heart was massive,\u201d Justin Lyon, an underwater cameraman and Steve\u2019s close friend told Australia\u2019s Network Ten television.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we\u2019re motoring back I\u2019m screaming at one of the other crew in the boat to put their hand over the wound and we\u2019re saying to him things like, \u2018Think of your kids, Steve, hang on, hang on, hang on.\u2019 He just sort of calmly looked up at me and said, \u2018I\u2019m dying.\u2019 And that was the last thing he said.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been nearly 19 years since the world lost one of the greatest conservationists, Steve Irwin.
