She was declared dead at the scene, with no visible signs of trauma to explain her tragic fate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to CBS News, it was fellow cadets who first had discovered Avery unconscious in her dormitory. An investigation was swiftly initiated to provide answers to her devastated family and friends.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-cause-of-death\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cause of death<\/h2>\n<p>The autopsy conducted by the El Paso County Coroner\u2019s Office revealed a tragic truth. Avery had succumbed to complications from pneumonia.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Post reported that the cause of death was \u201dpaeniclostridium sordelli sepsis complicating parainfluenza laryngotracheobronchitis\u201d \u2014 a serious bacterial infection that arose following a viral infection in her lungs.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wikipeida,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paraclostridium_sordellii\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paeniclostridium sordelli<\/a>\u00a0is a rare anaerobic bacterium known for causing a toxic shock-like syndrome.<\/p>\n<p>Avery\u2019s situation was further complicated by an acute viral lower respiratory tract infection, and according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/cause-of-death-revealed-19-year-old-air-force-academy-cadet-8722202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">People<\/a>, the Air Force Academy freshman had been suffering from a severe cough in the days leading up to her passing.<\/p>\n<p>Tragically, this heartbreaking loss may have been preventable.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/what-happened-avery-koonce-cause-death-revealed-us-air-force-cadet-found-dead-room-1727467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IBT<\/a>\u00a0spoke with forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden, who stated that antibiotic treatment could have made a significant difference if her condition had been recognized earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The bacteria responsible for the sepsis developed as a secondary infection, exploiting the weakness in her immune system caused by the viral infection.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-shocked-everyone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shocked everyone<\/h2>\n<p>The bacteria was found in her blood and her left lung.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIn essence, she died of untreated pneumonia,\u201d Dr. Baden explained, noting that the combination of the viral lung infection and bacterial sepsis likely resulted in symptoms such as coughing, fever, and difficulty breathing prior to her death.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that Avery may not have fully grasped the seriousness of her condition, leading to this tragic outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Her untimely passing shocked everyone who knew her. Just beginning her freshman year at the Air Force Academy, she had recently graduated from Thrall High School in Texas.
